Men's Tennis Claims Top Seed in Empire 8 West Division

ALFRED, NY - The Golden Flyers won eight of nine matches in Empire 8 men's tennis action at Alfred on Saturday. Nazareth also defeated the Saxons 8-1 on March 29th.

The Golden Flyers finish the regular season with a 7-1 record in conference contests and 11-7 overall. Alfred finishes the season 0-8 and 1-13 overall.

Oswego also entered the day at 6-1 in Empire 8 action, but Nazareth holds the tiebreaker over the Lakers in total points head-to-head with 11 compared to Oswego's seven. As the top seed in the Empire 8 West Division, the Golden Flyers will host the semifinals and championship.

In Saturday's action against the Saxons, the Golden Flyers won all three of the doubles matches. Max Funiciello paired with Griffin Bond to win their match 8-5. Chris Benedict and Noah Britton won 8-6 at second doubles, and Pierre Ntonga and David Tuller blanked Alfred 8-0 at third doubles.

Nazareth claimed five of six singles matches. Ntonga, Britton, Enoch Li, Benedict, and Tuller each won in two sets. Ntonga won 6-2, 6-0 at second singles, and Britton won his matches 6-2, 6-1 at third singles. Li took fourth singles 7-5, 6-1, and Benedict dominated fifth singles with his 6-1, 6-0 victory. Tuller closed out the singles victories with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

The Golden Flyers nearly swept the singles matches. Bond rallied from a 6-3 opening set loss to win 6-2 in the second set at first singles. In the third set, the Saxons' Breece Erickson scored the final points to outlast Bond.

In the semifinals, Nazareth will play Norwich, who is the second seed from the Empire 8 East Division. The teams will face each other on Friday, May 2nd. Second-seeded Norwich knocked off No. 3 Delhi 8-1 on Saturday, April 26th, to advance to the semifinals. The championship will be May 3rd at Nazareth.
