LANCASTER, PA - The Nazareth rugby squad had three more games for the Frostbite 7s on Sunday, falling 26-10 to the University of Rio Grande and then 19-5 to Harvard, before downing the University at Buffalo 14-7 in the final game.
Game 1 - University of Rio Grande
Tries were scored by
Dylan Fairchild and
Sam Palmesano. The try for Palmesano was his first as a Golden Flyer. Naz got off to a slow start and fell behind early after a couple of handling errors, came back from a 19 point deficit, scoring back to back tries but ultimatley coming up short in the end.
Game 2 - Harvard
Nazareth matched up against Harvard in the consolation round. Harvard got on the board quickly causing a 5-0 deficit, but after some good phase play, Nazareth moved down the field.
Rashawn Bowen broke the line and set up
Owen Barr for a 40-meter try. Play went back and forth and defenses were sharp but Harvard broke through the line at halftime to make it 12-5. In the second half, Nazareth came out strong on attack. The Golden Flyers were within 5 meters of scoring twice, but couldn't quite capitalize. Harvard grabbed a late try at the end of the game for a final score 19-5.
Game 3 - University at Buffalo
The final consolation match was against a familiar foe in the University at Buffalo. Nazareth came out with good intensity and won the possession battle early but UBs defensive was strong in the second half. After multiple phases of attack,
Tyshaun Wilson had a nice step back inside, beating multiple defenders before finding
Dylan Fairchild who finished the try. Fairchild also had the conversion after making it 7-0.
Naz started the second half off strong, playing comfortably on attack and after a few minutes the University of Buffalo pressured Nazareth's attack but Jacob Hernandez set up Aidan Pavlek to beat a couple defenders and finish the try. Fairchild added the conversion to make the score 14-0. The Golden Flyers had a few more chances to capitalize but kept playing stout defense. Eventually UB broke the defensive line and finished a try at the end.
Naz finished the tournament with two wins and three losses. The Golden Flyers will be back in action for teh Old Blue 7s in Mt. Vernon, NY at the end of March.
