LANCASTER, PA - It was a split for the Nazareth rugby squad on Saturday as it began its 7s season at the Frostbite 7s, defeating Rutgers 14-12 before being blanked by AIC 31-0.
Rutgers
It was a slow start for Nazareth as some handling errors kept the Golden Flyers in the defensive end for the beginning of the first half. Rutgers took a 5-0 lead early. After a few minutes of back-and-forth play, the Flyers had a long run from
Aiden Pavlek to set up a smooth try assisted by
Dylan Fairchild, finished by Conner Nicks. The try was Nick's first try as a Golden Flyer. Fairchild had the conversion for 2 points and the halftime score was 7-5 in favor of Nazareth.
In the second half the wind continued to play a factor for both sides before
Rashawn Bowen cut through the defense for a score. Fairchild had the conversion. Rutgers scored a late try at the end for a final score 14-12.
AIC
Nazareth and AIC were scoreless for most of the first half, with Nazareth winning the possession battle. AIC got hot late in the second half and pulled away for a 31-0 final.
