Men's Basketball Loses in Heartbreaker on the Road

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - On Friday night, men's basketball lost a one-point game to SUNY Brockport on the road. Jaylen Savage and Merritt Holly had double-doubles in the loss.

With the loss, Nazareth drops to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in the conference, while Brockport improves to 13-8 overall and 11-1 in conference play.

In the first half, Brockport jumped out to an early lead and extended its lead to nine by the 11:23 mark at 24-15. However, within three minutes, Nazareth had that lead back down to three with buckets from Holly, Will Burnett, and Luke Insley. Nazareth claimed its first lead since the first bucket of the game with 4:40 left in the half when the Golden Flyers went up 33-32. For the remainder of the half, the teams traded buckets, eventually Brockport taking the 42-40 lead heading into halftime.

The Golden Flyers took the lead less than three minutes into the second half at 44-43. Nazareth had its biggest lead of the game at the 14:31 mark in the second half at 54-47. However, the Golden Eagles went on a seven-point run to tie up the game once again.

With 20 seconds left, Nazareth was down by two with the ball, but a turnover with seven seconds left forces the Golden Flyers to foul again. Brockport made its two free-throws. At the buzzer, Savage jacked up a contested three, trying to also draw a foul, but Brockport was smart enough to contest the shot without touching Savage. Savage swished the three, but no foul was called and Brockport won the game 86-85.

Savage was Nazareth's highest scorer with 31 points, while also adding 11 rebounds, and three assists. Holly's double-double came from 14 points, and 11 rebounds. Tyler Putney added 13 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Insley was Nazareth's final scorer in double-digits with 10, while also dishing out nine assists. Zachary McFarland scored six points for the Flyers, while Jack Broderick added four and three rebounds. Liam Hopwood and Burnett had three and two points, and both grabbed two rebounds.

The Golden Flyers will be back on the road February 8 at 4 p.m. at SUNY Geneseo for another conference match-up.
