Final Results
PITTSFORD, NY – The final team scoring came down to the last couple events of the second day of competition at the 2024 Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championships and when the dust settled, the Nazareth University Men were a mere 11 points out of first place and finished second overall in the team points race.
Junior Cade Eells was named the Track Athlete of eh Meet and sophomore Jack Pomykaj was named the Field Athlete of the Meet for the Golden Flyers. Junior Joey Nettles was named the Empire 8 Torchbearer Award winner for the men.
Utica (213 points) won the team title and Nazareth was second with 202 points. St. John Fisher (121) finished third followed by Houghton (49), Alfred (46), Sage (45) and Hartwick (5).
Eells won the steeplechase Friday and was second in the 1500 and third in the 5K Saturday for Nazareth. Pomykaj won the Decathlon with a school-record 5,954 points as he placed first in the 110 hurdles, pole vault and 1500-meter race Saturday. In addition, he ran a leg of the 4x100 relay for Nazareth that placed second with a school-record time of 43.01.
The 4x100 relay included graduate student Mike Welch, junior Banjamin Lewis, Pomykaj and sophomore Jaylen Savage.
The 4x400 relay with Welch, freshman Jack Healy, sophomore Gavin McAllister and Savage finished first with a season-best time of 3:22.75.
McAllister added a first-place finish in the 800 with a personal best time of 1:56.47 and freshman Cole Hastings was fifth in the race with a time of 1:59.33 for his personal best.
Graduate student Connor McCauslin won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.28 while sophomore Aaron Lund (15.86) was second and sophomore Holden Thomas (16.63) was fifth.
Lund was second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 58.16 and McCauslin crossed the line in fourth with a time of 59.67.
Pomykaj was first in the Decathlon and Lund was second with 5,524 points as he won the discus and javelin events Saturday. Thomas was third with 4,721 points.
Eells placed second in the 1500 with a time of 4:05.83 and junior Ethan Kenyon was third in the race with a time of 4:07.87.
In the 5K, Eells placed third with his time of 15:31.25 and graduate student Nathan Bowers was fourth with a 15:31.61 time.
Welch added a third-place finish in the 100-meters with a time of 11.24, Lewis was fourth and Welch fifth in the 200 with times of 22.93 and 23.12 respectively.
In the field events, junior
Kyle Reid was fourth in the high jump as he cleared the 1.84-meter bar (6' ½"), sophomore
Gabe Wilson was fifth in the triple jump with a personal best of 12.89 meters (42' 3 ½") and freshman
David Dobrowolski was sixth in the discus with a personal best throw of 38.70 meters (127' 0").
