Softball Suffers Non-Conference Road Losses at Buffalo State

BUFFALO, NY– Sophomore Ashley Bell collected three hits and two runs batted in for the Nazareth University Softball team during a non-conference matchup versus Buffalo State Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Flyers (4-22) dropped both games to Buffalo State (15-12) with scores of 5-1 and 12-4.

In game one of the doubleheader, Bell collected a pair of hits while freshmen Haleigh Suitor and Avery Zembek added one hit each.

The Golden Flyers put up their only run in the top of the third inning with a single up the middle from Suitor scoring Bell. Suitor notched her 18th RBI of the season on the hit.

The Bengals answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and added one more in the fifth. Both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the game with a 5-1 final.

Zembek scattered six hits, two strikeouts, and two earned runs in the circle.

Nazareth jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second game.

Freshman Morgan Russo led off the inning with a single into left field followed by a pair of walks from both Suitor and Maddy Spakoski to load the bases. Freshman Anna Spencer singled to left field to score Russo on the hit. With the bases still loaded, senior Megan Pum hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Suitor, extending the lead to 2-0. Bell came up with a big two-out, two RBI single down the right field line scoring Spakoski and Spencer.

In the bottom half of the third inning, the Bengals put together a 10-run inning to take the lead, 10-4. Nine out of the ten runs came with two outs and all 10 runs were unearned.

Buffalo State ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning off a pair of hits and an RBI groundout for the eight-run lead. The final score was 12-4.

The Golden Flyers totaled four hits in the second game with Russo going 2-for-2 with two hits and a walk.

Nazareth returns to Empire 8 conference play on Wednesday April 24 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. versus St. John Fisher at Golden Flyer Field.
