ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth University Softball team collected 10 hits in a pair of games against rival St. John Fisher but managed just two runs as the Golden Flyers dropped both ends of an Empire 8 doubleheader Thursday on Flyer Field.
Three players had two hits each in game one with senior Megan Pum and sophomores Maddy Spakoski and Ashley Bell each finishing 2-for-3 in the game.
St. John Fisher (24-4 overall, 8-0 Empire 8) opened with a five-run first inning but were held to just two runs the rest of the way.
Nazareth (4-24, 2-8 Empire 8) scored its lone run in the sixth inning.
Freshman Haleigh Suitor opened the inning with a double and Spakoski singled through the left side of the infield to advance Suitor to third. Spakoski was caught stealing but Suitor managed to score on the throw to second for the Nazareth run.
In game two, the Cardinals had a big inning in the third with a five-run inning and added three more in the fourth to open a 10-1 lead.
The Nazareth run came in the bottom of the first inning as freshman Morgan Russo started the inning with a double and moved to third with a Suitor single to deep shortstop. Suitor was thrown out attempting to steal but Russo scored on the next pitch with a passed ball by the catcher.
Nazareth will wrap up the Empire 8 scheduled with two games at Elmira Saturday and another two at Keuka Sunday.
