ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Morgan Russo finished the day 4-for-7 with two runs scored and a run batted in to lead the Nazareth University Softball team on her birthday but the Golden Flyers dropped both ends of the non-conference doubleheader against Geneseo on Flyer Field.
Geneseo (11-15) won the opener 12-1 and took game two 10-6.
The Knights jumped to a 3-0 lead with a big inning in the second inning of game one.
Nazareth (4-20) answered in the third inning as Russo led off the inning with a double to the wall in right centerfield and scored as fellow freshman Haleigh Suitor singled for the RBI and trimmed the lead to 3-1.
Geneseo broke the game open in the fourth with seven runs and added two more in the fifth for the final score.
Russo was 2-for-3 in the game with a pair of doubles.
In game two, Geneseo scored in the top of the first inning but Nazareth responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Russo led off the inning with a single up the middle before Suitor smashed her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
Nazareth scored again in the second inning with a two-out rally. Freshman Avery Zembek singled with two out and sophomore Madison Chodkowski reached on a fielding error before Russo came through with a run-scoring single to center field for the 3-1 Nazareth lead.
Sophomore Maddy Spakoski and senior Megan Pum scored runs in the third inning as the Golden Flyers opened up a 5-1 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Geneseo rallied for three runs in each of the next three innings to take a lead with a 10-5 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Spakoski hammered her third homer of the season for the final tally.
On the day, Russo was 4-for-7, Suitor was 3-for-7 with two runs and two RBI while Spakoski and freshman Anna Spencer had two hits each.
Nazareth will play at Buffalo State Sunday before returning to Empire 8 play Wednesday with a pair of games against St. John Fisher on Flyer Field.
