WEBSTER, NY – Freshman Morgan Russo finished with a pair of hits including a solo home run over the centerfield fence for the Nazareth University Softball team Saturday. The Golden Flyers dropped both ends of the Empire 8 doubleheader with Utica by scores of 10-1 and 10-0.
The games were played on the turf field at Webster Schroeder High School due to unplayable field conditions at Nazareth.
In the first game, Utica (13-5 overall, 4-0 Empire 8) took an early lead with a run in the first inning and doubled the lead in the third inning with another run. A five-run fourth inning opened up a 7-0 lead and the Pioneers tacked on three more in the top of the fifth inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Russo launched a home run on the first pitch she saw to avoid the shutout.
Russo finished 2-for-3 with a run and a run batted in. Freshman Haleigh Suitor, sophomore Maddy Spakoski and junior Madison Chodkowski had single hits for Nazareth.
In game two, Nazareth managed just one hit as freshman Anna Spencer connected on a single to short centerfield in the fifth inning to break up the bid for a no-hitter.
The doubleheader scheduled for Sunday against Russell Sage has been rescheduled for Tuesday with games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Flyer Field.
