Haleigh Suitor Sparks and Offensive Rally for Softball Split

ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Haleigh Suitor finished with three hits, three runs scored, two runs batted in, a triple and a home run to lead the Nazareth Softball team to a split in the non-conference doubleheader against Alfred State Saturday afternoon on Flyer Field.

Alfred State (5-7) won the opener with a tight 3-0 victory, but Nazareth (2-12) rallied for a 9-7 victory in the second game to salvage the split.

Suitor had one of the three Nazareth hits in the first game and freshman Avery Zembek tossed a complete-game with a career-best nine strikeouts in the close game.

Alfred State scored a run in the top of the first inning and no more runs were scored until the final inning when the Pioneers added two insurance runs for the final score.

Suitor along with sophomores Maddy Spakoski and Ashley Bell had the hits for Nazareth.

In game two, each team scored a run in the first and after Alfred State scored a run in the second, Nazareth took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Golden Flyers extended the lead with a run in the third on a sacrifice fly but the Pioneers surged ahead with a grand slam in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.

Nazareth tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Suitor hit her two-run homer to centerfield.

There was no scoring in the fifth inning and Alfred State grabbed a 7-6 lead in the sixth.

Spakoski hit a two-run bases loaded double to regain the lead for Nazareth in the bottom of the sixth and sophomore Maci Vetter connected on her second sacrifice fly of the game to give the Golden Flyers a 9-7 lead.

The Pioneers managed to get one runner on base in the seventh but a fielder's choice force and a ground out to second base ended the threat and the game.

Suitor, Spakoski and freshman Morgan Russo were each 2-for-4 at the plate with Suitor and Spakoski each knocking in a pair of runs. Senior Megan Pum was 2-for-3 with a run and a run batted in.

Bell earned her first career pitching win in relief and Zembek picked up the save as she tossed the seventh inning.

Nazareth returns to action Wednesday against SUNY Geneseo with a 3p.m. doubleheader on Flyer Field.
