ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Morgan Russo finished with three hits, three runs batted in and her first career home run for the Nazareth University Softball team but it was not enough as Brockport swept the home opening doubleheader with scores of 7-3 and 16-10.
The 13 runs for Nazareth (1-11) and the 10 runs in the second game were a season high. The Golden Flyers also pounded out a season-best 19 hits including five extra base hits.
In game one, Brockport (5-9) jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning, but Nazareth cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom half of the inning. A four-run third inning game Brockport a 6-1 edge and the Golden Eagles added another run in the top of the seventh for a six-run lead.
Nazareth scored twice in the bottom of the seventh including a solo home run by Russo to trim the lead but the rally fell short in the 7-3 loss.
Russo and sophomores Maddie Klein and Maddy Spakoski had two hits each and freshman Haleigh Suitor led the Golden Flyers with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Senior Megan Pum was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.
In game two, Nazareth took the early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning but Brockport exploded for eight runs in the second inning to take the lead.
After single runs in the third and fourth innings for Brockport, Nazareth cut the lead to 10-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Each team scored three in the fifth and Nazareth scored three more in the sixth to cut the lead to 13-10 heading into the final inning.
Brockport tacked on three more runs in the seventh and Nazareth went down in order to finish the game.
Junior Madison Chodkowski had two hits in the game to lead the offense.
Nazareth is back in action Saturday with another non-conference doubleheader on Flyer Field against Alfred State with a 1 p.m. start.
