CLERMONT, FL – A tough day at the plate resulted in a pair of losses for the Nazareth University Softball team Tuesday morning at the Legend's Way Complex in Clermont, Florida.
Nazareth (1-5) dropped an 8-0 decision to Grinnell in the opener and then fell by an 11-3 score in the second game of the day against Elmhurst College. Both games were five innings.
Against Grinnell, the Golden Flyers were limited to two hits as freshmen Maddie Klein and Anna Spencer collected one hit each. Grinnell score one in the first and added three runs in the second and three more in the fourth before capping the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead 8-0 for the win.
In the Elmhurst game, Nazareth scored twice in the third inning and added the third run in the bottom of the fifth.
Sophomore Bella Romano led off the third as she was hit by pitch and moved to second on a single by freshman Avery Zembek. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Romano came in to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman Morgan Russo before Zembek advanced on another wild pitch for the two Nazareth runs.
In the fifth inning, Klein doubled to centerfield to open the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Russo followed with an infield single and stole second base before another wild pitch allowed Klein to score and Russo to move to third before the final out was recorded with a ground out.
Nazareth will close out the Florida trip with games against St. Lawrence and Clarkson Wednesday.
