Megan Pum Delivers Big Hit in First Softball Win

CLERMONT, FL – Senior Megan Pum led the Nazareth University Softball team with two hits Sunday including the game-winning, two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a 3-2 win for the Golden Flyers over Bates College in the second game of the day.

Nazareth (1-3) dropped an 8-0 decision to Wisconsin Eau Clair (4-3) to start the day but played a close game with Bates (0-1) that ended up going into extra innings before the two runs in the bottom of the inning gave Nazareth its for win of the season.

Against Bates, Nazareth used a double play in the top of the fourth inning to keep the game scoreless as sophomore Ashley Bell snared a line drive at second base and made a quick throw to Pum at third for the double play to end the top of the inning.

In the bottom half of the frame, sophomore Maddy Spakoski led off the inning with a single and with two outs, freshman Morgan Russo drilled a shot to right centerfield for a triple that scored Spakoski for the 1-0 Nazareth lead.

Bates answered in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

The score remained tied at 1-1 as Nazareth starter freshman Avery Zembek was solid in the circle for the Golden Flyers. She finished with a complete-game win with four hits allowed over eight innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Only one of the two Bates runs was earned.

The Bobcats scored in the top half of the eighth inning with the runner placed at second scoring on a fielding error to start the inning. Zembek was able to retire the next three batters to end the top lf the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, Spakoski was placed at second and advanced to third on a one-out single by Bell. Bell stole second to put runners on second and third. Russo was called out on a check swing third strike for the second out before Pum came to the plate and lifted a fly ball to short right centerfield. Three fielders converged with the centerfielder making a sliding attempt at the catch by came up short allowing both Spakoski and Bell to score for the Nazareth win.

Nazareth will have an off day Monday but return to action Tuesday with morning games against Grinnell and Elmhurst at the Legends Way complex.
