CLERMONT, FL – Freshman Haleigh Suitor had three of the eight hits for the Nazareth University Softball team Saturday as the Golden Flyers opened the Spring Training Trip with a pair of losses.
Nazareth (0-2) dropped a 9-1 decision to Wooster in game one and lost an 8-1 decision to Knox College in the second game of the annual Florida trip.
In game one against Wooster (6-6), sophomore Maddie Klein, freshman Avery Zembek and Suitor collected one hit each.
The lone Nazareth run came in the sixth inning when Klein led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Zembek pushed her to third base with a ground out before freshman Morgan Russo lifted a sacrifice fly to score Klein. Suitor followed with a double to the wall in left-center field before the final out of the game was recorded.
Zembek made her first collegiate start in the circle and allowed four earned runs on 11 hits.
In the second game, Nazareth scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Klein reached base on an error but was eliminated with a fielder's choice. Suitor drilled her second double of the day to right centerfield to score Russo on the play.
Knox (2-5) answered with two runs in the third and added two more in the fifth before closing out the game with a four-run sixth.
Suitor was 2-for-3 while sophomore Maddy Spakoski, senior Megan Pum and sophomore Ashley Bell each had a hit for the Golden Flyers.
Freshman Sydney Collier started and allowed eight runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Bell tossed the final 1 2/3 innings with one hit allowed.
Nazareth will face the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and Bates Sunday at the Legends Way complex in Clermont.
