Box Score 2 BEREA, OH -- Senior Owen Wickens cleared the 1,000 kills milestone with his 16th of the match and one of his season-high 29 kills in the match as the Nazareth University Men's Volleyball team to a five-set win over #19 Baldwin Wallace Saturday. In the second match of the day, the Golden Flyers dropped a 3-0 decision to Messiah.
Against Baldwin Wallace, Nazareth won the opening set 25-20 before the Yellow Jackets rebounds to take a close second set 25-23. The Golden Flyers regained the momentum with a 25-16 win in the third set before Baldwin Wallace forced the fifth-set tiebreaker with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.
In the fifth set, Nazareth used a 4-0 run late in the set to move a 9-8 lead to 13-8 before a kill by Wickens and another by sophomore Andrew Bodensteiner capped the 15-11 win for the Golden Flyers in the fifth set.
In the third set, Wickens capped a rally with a dig and then came up from the back line for his 16th kill of the match and his 1,000th career kill to give Nazareth a 15-9 lead in the set.
Wickens finished with a season-high 29 kills and a .449 attack percentage, 14 digs and four aces. Bodensteiner added 13 kills and AJ Burda handed out 47 assists and nine digs. Josh Weaver collected nine digs and combined with Nathan DeJoy with each registering five blocks.
In the Messiah match, Nazareth fell by set scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-22.
Wickens had 12 kills and 11 digs. Weaver had nine kills and Burda handed out 22 assists.
Nazareth returns home to open United Volleyball Conference (UVC) play Wednesday as the Golden Flyers host St. John Fisher.
