UTICA, NY – Holding a five-point lead heading into the final event, the Nazareth 4 x 400-meter relay of
Michael Puglisi,
Benjamin Lewis,
Gavin McAllister, and
Jaylen Savage won the race to help Nazareth earn its first-ever Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Utica University. The Golden Flyers finished with 219 points, followed by Utica with 210 and St. John Fisher with 119.
With the win, Nazareth completes the sweep of both the indoor and outdoor Empire 8 Championships, each being the programs first.
Heading into the final event, Nazareth needed a good showing in the 4 x 400 to hoist the crown, and they did just that. Puglisi, Lewis, McAllister and Savage ran a facility record and season best time of 3:23.33 to secure the victory.
Nazareth started the day with a huge outing in the 1500, picking up 26 points.
Patrick Healy (4:04.71) took first,
Cade Eells (4:06.93) second,
Nathan Bowers (4:07.60) third and
Ethan Glashauser (4:09.20) was fifth.
Healy later set a facility record and personal best in the 800 to earn 10 points, coming in at 1:57.65. His previous best time was 1:58.52. McAllister was second, also in a personal best of 1:58.22.
Eells showed out in the 5,000, coming in 15:31.60 to earn 10 points, while Bowers was second in 15:33.58 and
Matt Reimann was fourth in 15:38.13.
The Golden Flyers also shined in the 110-meter hurdles, garnering 22 points. Senior
Kaleb Luton was first (15.0),
Connor McCauslin (15.39) second, and
Holden Thomas (15.97) fourth.
John Pomykaj had great showing in the decathlon, winning six of 10 events (100-meter dash, long jump, pole vault, high jump, 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles) with 5,493 points, the second-best point total in school history.
Nazareth's 4 x 100-meter relay of McCauslin, Lewis, Pomykaj and Savage ran to a fourth place finish (43.58).
McCauslin was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (58.31) and Lewis came in fourth (22.75) in the 200-meter dash. Also finishing in fourth place was freshman
Adam Reifsteck in the triple jump, in a personal best time mark of 13.15 meters (43 feet, 1 ¾ inches).
Savage earned a fifth place nod in the 100-meter dash final in a time of 11.19.
After setting the school record a week ago, senior
Arthur DeVasto broke his own mark going for 1.87 meters (6 feet, 1 ½ inches) to earn sixth place.
