Strong Pitching and Timely Hitting Give Softball a Road Sweep

HOUGHTON, NY – Senior Emily Daciw struck out a season-high 12 batters in a game one shutout victory and then came on to pitch the final three innings including three strike outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Nazareth Softball team came from behind for an 8-7 win to complete the sweep.

The timely hitting came off the bats of freshman Maddy Spakoski with a two-run single in the seventh and junior Marissa Berghorn with her sixth hit of the day and an RBI double to push across the go-ahead run for the 8-7 lead.

Nazareth (8-6 overall, 3-1 Empire 8) scored a run in the first and three more in the second for the early 4-0 lead and then watched as Daciw was dazzling in the circle with her 12 strike outs. She had seven K's in the first three innings and then finished with at least one strike out in each of the final four innings including two in the seventh to complete the shutout victory.

Junior Megan Pum was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Berghorn started her hot day at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort with a run scored.

In game two, Nazareth took an early lead with a pair of runs in the first but Houghton (4-17 overall, 0-2 Empire 8) rallied for five runs in the third to take a lead.

The Golden Flyers scored three in the top of the fourth to tie the game as seven of the first eight batters of the inning recorded hits for Nazareth.

The Highlanders responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.

Neither team scored in the fifth or sixth innings but Nazareth rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to take the slim lead. Spakoski had a two-run single to tie the game and Berghorn followed with the run-scoring double to give Nazareth the lead.

Houghton led off the bottom of the seventh with a double but Daciw struck out three straight batters to end the game.

Berghorn was 3-for-4 and junior Cassidy Hoffmier was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI while freshman Ashley Bell and Spakoski had 2-for-4 efforts at the plate and Spakoski had three RBI.

Nazareth will play a pair of non-conference games Wednesday at home against Buffalo State and return to Empire 8 games Saturday at Utica.
