Softball Stumbles in Non-Conference Twinbill

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Emily Daciw surpassed the 300 career strike out plateau and the Nazareth Softball team hammered out 19 hits but Cazenovia put together four three-run innings to come away with a pair of victories Thursday afternoon on Flyer Field.

A swinging strike out to start the second inning of the opening game was the 300th career strike out for Daciw who becomes just the second pitcher in Nazareth history to surpass the milestone. It was one of the seven strike outs in the game for Daciw but the senior allowed six runs in five innings and was tagged with the loss as Cazenovia (16-13) scored twice in the third and three times in the fourth for the early lead.

Nazareth (10-12) answered with a pair of runs in the fourth as sophomore Maggie Burdick laced a two-run single up the middle.

The Wildcats added a run in the fifth and then rallied for three runs in each of the final two innings to run away with the win. A run-scoring single by graduate student Sarah Simmons capped the scoring for Nazareth in the seventh inning.

In the second game, Nazareth took and early lead as junior Marissa Berghorn delivered an RBI single but Cazenovia answered with two runs in the second inning to take the lead.

Senior Hailey Bennett hit a run-scoring double in the bottom of the second to tie the score.

Cazenovia regained the lead with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth for an 8-2 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Nazareth loaded the bases and forced home three runs to trim the lead before each team scored once in the seventh for the final score.

Junior Cassidy Hoffmier led the offense with a 3-for-6 day with four runs and a run batted in while Berghorn, Simmons and Burdick added two hits each for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth returns to Empire 8 action Saturday with games against Elmira. The team will be raising money for cancer research and celebrating senior day against the Soaring Eagles.
