AMHERST, MA – Sophomore goaltender
Raphael Provencher made a season-high 33 saves to help Nazareth earn a 2-2 tie at Amherst on Tuesday in non-conference action. After a 2-1 win over the Mammoths on Monday night, Nazareth settled for a 2-2 draw on Tuesday.
Logan Tobias and
Liam Quinlivan scored the goals for Nazareth.
It was the Golden Flyers first tie of the season as they move to 8-4-1 overall, while Amherst moves to 6-2-2. Earning the win and tie was an impressive effort on the road as the strong Mammoths squad received votes in the most recent USCHO.com poll.
Similarly to Monday's matchup between Nazareth and Amherst, the score was 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. The Mammoths, however, statistically dominated the opening period with a 16-4 edge in shots on the goal.
That offensive pressure from Amherst translated into the second period with a 4-on-4 goal coming just :53 seconds in to make it 1-0.
The score remained that way until less than eight minutes remained in the period as the Golden Flyers forced a turnover with a heavy forecheck, leading to a game-tying goal.
Joey Schaefer fired a shot on net and Tobias cleaned up the rebound on an open net on the backside to make it 1-1.
Nazareth was able to take its first lead of the game with just under a minute and a half left in the period on a goal from Quinlivan, his second in as many days. The goal was spurred by a beautiful backhand cross-ice pass from
Michael DiSchiavi. Sitting just above the blue line with his back facing the Golden Flyers goal, Dischiavi flipped a pass beyond the Mammoths last defender for Quinlivan to wrist in the goal to the far post.
Matt Toporowski tied the game at two apiece four minutes into the third on his second goal of the game.
After no more goals were scored in regulation, both teams exchanged opportunities in the overtime period with Nazareth registering five shots to one for Amherst. The best chance of the period came with :13 seconds on the clock as a puck jumped into the air and Provencher gloved it down on the top of the net to make his final save of the game.
Nazareth will now have a full nine days before hosting Manhattanville at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 13.
