BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth rallied from a early deficit in the second game and
Emily Daciw pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as the Golden Flyers defeated Buffalo State, 5-4, to gain a split in a non-conference softball doubleheader. Buffalo State won the first game 10-5.
Nazareth has an overall record of 11-13 and resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Friday with a doubleheader at Elmira at 3 and 5 p.m.
Trailing 4-1 through three innings in the second game, Nazareth rallied to score three times in the fourth inning and once in the fifth to win the game.
Nazareth loaded the bases in the fourth on a walk to
Megan Pum, a single by
Hailie Bennett and a walk to Daciw.
Cassidy Hoffmier was hit by a pitch to force in the first run, then a fielder's choice by
Sarah Simmons sent another run home.
Marissa Berghorn followed with a single up the middle to tie the score at 4-4.
Nazareth loaded the bases again in the fifth inning and
Justine Brooks delivered the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly that plated Bennett. Daciw then closed out the game on the pitcher's mound as she allowed just two baserunners over the last three innings to gain her sixth win of the season. She finished with three strikeouts in relief of freshman starter
Cat Moores, who had one strikeout in the first 2 2/3 innings. Brooks had a multi-hit game for Nazareth, going 2-for-3 out of the lead-off spot with one run scored and the game-winning run batted in.
In the first game, Nazareth scored once in the first inning and four more times in the fourth to take a seemingly safe 5-0 lead, before the Bengals rallied. Buffalo State scored six times in the bottom half of the fourth off Nazareth starter
Maddie Funk, who had limited the Bengals to just one hit through the first three innings.
Brooks opened the game with a single and scored Nazareth's first run on a double by Simmons.
In the fourth inning, Nazareth got singles from Pum, Bennett and
Katie Schmidt to load the bases. Back-to-back two-run doubles by Brooks and Hoffmier accounted for four runs and a 5-0 lead.
Most of the damage in the Bengals' six-run fourth inning came with two outs. The Bengals had seven hits in the inning overall, including a two-run single and a three-run double. Buffalo State added two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the win.
Brooks and Pum each had two hits in the first game for Nazareth. In addition to doubles by Brooks and Hoffmier, Simmons and Funk also had extra-base hits.
