HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – Visiting Nazareth split a pair of Empire 8 Conference softball games Friday against Elmira as
Maddie Funk tossed a six-hit complete game for a 3-1 win in the second game. Elmira won the first game 3-2.
Nazareth has a 12-14 overall record with a 5-5 mark in conference play. Elmira is 7-10 and 3-6.
Funk was efficient on the pitcher's mound for the Golden Flyers in the second game as she scattered five hits and struck out three for her fifth win.
Nazareth scored all three of its runs in the first inning as
Justine Brooks opened the game with a single and
Cassidy Hoffmier reached base on an infield error.
Sarah Simmons singled home Brooks with the first run with Hoffmier advancing to third. After Simmons stole second, both runners scored on a single by
Marissa Berghorn.
Elmira broke up the shutout with a run in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Funk gave up a two-out double, but she was able to close out the game on a grounder to second base.
Nazareth also received a well-pitched game from
Emily Daciw in the opener as she fanned 15 Elmira batters.
After Elmira scored in the first inning, Nazareth tied the score in the top of the second as Berghorn singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Maggie Burdick. She advanced to third on an infield grounder and came home on a single by Daciw.
Elmira went ahead in the fifth with the help of an infield error, a passed ball and a bases-loaded walk that forced in a second run.
Nazareth scored in the seventh following a pair of Elmira errors that enabled
Megan Pum and Daciw to reach base. With two outs,
Jessica Klem singled home Pum with Nazareth's second run, but the tying run was left stranded at second as Brooks was called out on strikes to end the game.
Nazareth has the weekend off for Easter and returns to action Tuesday at the University of Rochester for games at 3 and 5 p.m. The Golden Flyers are also home Thursday against Cazenovia and Saturday against Russell Sage.
