ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Katie Schmidt connected on the third hit of the inning to score junior Brooke Hailston from third for the winning run as the Nazareth College Softball team scored a 4-3 victory for the first win over St. John Fisher since 2015 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals (10-14 overall, 6-1 Empire 8) came back and scored a 3-0 win in the nightcap of the doubleheader to earn a split.
In the opener, Nazareth (10-12, 4-4 E8) scored single runs in each of the first three innings to build a 3-0 lead. Senior Sarah Simmons knocked in junior Justine Brooks who had reached base on an infield single in the first inning.
A pair of St. John Fisher errors helped to load the bases in the second inning and Brooks lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield as junior Emily Daciw scored to give Nazareth a 2-0 lead.
In the third, Daciw singled to score Simmons as the Golden Flyers increased the lead to 3-0.
St. John Fisher rallied in the fourth for a pair of runs to trim the lead and added a single run in the sixth to knot the score at 3-3.
In the eighth, the Cardinals advanced a runner to third on a walk, sacrifice bunt and passed ball but Daciw struck out the next batter and then caught an infield fly to end the threat and the top of the inning.
Freshman Maggie Burdick singled to start the eighth for Nazareth and Hailston was inserted as a pinch runner.
Daciw laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hailston into scoring position and sophomore Megan Pum singled to right field to put runners on the corners.
Schmidt was next and slapped a single into short left field to score Hailston from third with the winning run.
Simmons and Pum were each 2-for-4 in the game and Daciw recorded 10 strike outs to earn the complete-game victory.
In the nightcap, Nazareth was limited to just two hits with the first not coming until the sixth inning as junior Hailie Bennett hit a two-out single to left field to break up the no-hitter effort.
Berghorn had the second Nazareth hit in the seventh inning.
St. John Fisher scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the three runs.
Nazareth returns to non-conference play Wednesday with a pair of games at Buffalo State with a 3 p.m. start.
