No. 1 RIT overwhelms Nazareth, 25-9

Golden Flyers (0-2 overall) visit Clarkson Saturday at 2 p.m.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Top-ranked RIT scored the game's first nine goals Wednesday in a non-conference game at Nazareth and the Tigers went on to take a 25-9 men's lacrosse victory over the Golden Flyers at NLPA Field.

RIT, ranked first in the USILA Division III poll and the defending national champion, improved to 2-0 overall. Nazareth is 0-2.

Jon Roth had three goals and one assist for Nazareth and Quinn McKercher added two goals and one assist. Jack McOsker, Greg Bilek, Quinn Conroy and Clifford Pollard also had goals for the Golden Flyers. Clifford Gaston led the Tigers with four goals and three assists and Andrew Doktor scored three times. Ryan Barnable had two goals and two assists.

Nazareth had difficulty possessing the ball in the early stages of the game and Tigers took advantage by scoring nine times in the first quarter and five more times in the second. RIT's Jimmy Spillane won 12 of 14 face-offs in the first half to give the Tigers an edge. Nazareth finally got on the board with 1:26 left in the opening period on an unassisted goal by Roth. Pollard scored for Nazareth in the second quarter off an assist from Quinn McKercher.

Nazareth's best quarter was the third as the Golden Flyers scored five times with Roth scoring twice. Conroy, McKercher and Bilek also tallied and Jeremy Jacob added two assists.

For RIT, Doktor scored all three of his goals in the fourth quarter as the Tigers scored eight more times. McOsker and Quinn McKercher each had unassisted goals for Nazareth.

RIT had large advantages in shots (52-25), ground balls (47-22) and face-off wins (25-13). Matt Keane and Brett Machado took most of Nazareth's face-offs and combined to win 13.

Carson Pickeral gained the start in goal for Nazareth and played most of the game to finish with 12 saves. Freshman Colin Perks played the final 6:26.

Nazareth returns to action Saturday with a non-conference game at Clarkson at 2 p.m.
