Second-half rally falls short at Clarkson, 19-15

Golden Flyers (0-3) host Brockport Tuesday in search of first win

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth outscored Clarkson 11-6 in the second half Saturday, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as the Golden Knights held on for a 19-15 men's lacrosse victory over the Golden Flyers.

Clarkson improved to 3-0 with the non-conference win, while the Golden Flyers dropped to 0-3. Nazareth searches for its first win Tuesday at home against Brockport at 4 p.m.

Brett Randall led Nazareth with six points on four goals and two assists and Jeremy Jacob added three goals and one assist. Jon Roth also scored three times.

First-half possessions were difficult to come by for the Golden Flyers as Clarkson won 13 of the 19 face-offs and built a commanding 13-4 advantage through two quarters. Greg Bilek scored twice for Nazareth in the first quarter and Randall and Roth each scored in the second, but Clarkson scored three times in a 49-second span in the second quarter seize control.

The momentum changed in the third quarter as three Nazareth goals in just over two minutes brought the Golden Flyers back within 13-7. First Jacob scored unassisted, then Quinn McKercher converted an extra-man pass from Randall 30 seconds later. Jon Parrinello scooped up a ground ball on the ensuing face-off and fed Randall for another goal.

After Clarkson scored to interrupt the run, Nazareth closed the quarter by scoring four of the last five goals to make the score 15-11 heading into the fourth quarter. Roth scored off an assist from Braeden McKercher at the nine-minute mark. With under two minutes left, Nazareth scored three times in a 54-second span. Jacob scored two of the goals and assisted on the other.

Roth opened the fourth-quarter scoring off an assist from Randall at 12:37. Just 30 seconds later, Nazareth appeared to cut further into the Clarkson lead, but Randall was called for diving into the crease to negate an apparent goal. Instead of trailing by two, Nazareth turned the ball over and Clarkson capitalized to extend the lead to 16-12.

Randall, Jack McOsker and Parrinello scored later in the quarter to trim the deficit to 17-15, but Clarkson scored the final two goals of the gae to win by four.

Clarkson finished with advantages in shots (59-38), ground balls (38-31) and face-offs (20-17), although Nazareth won 11 face-offs in the second half. Freshman Matt Keane went 15-for-32 on draws.

Carson Pickeral played most of the game in goal for Nazareth and finished with 12 saves and 14 goals allowed. Eric Almquist played about 14 minutes and made five saves.
