Softball Finishes Florida Trip with a Walk-off Win

FORT MYERS, FL – Freshman Maggie Burdick singled to right field to score fellow freshman Katie Schmidt from third as the Nazareth College Softball team scored a 1-0 win over Western Connecticut State Friday in the final game of the annual Florida Spring Training trip.

Nazareth (4-6) had dropped a close 11-10 decision to University of Maine-Presque Isle earlier in the day but came back to finish the trip on a winning note. The Golden Flyers are scheduled to play at Alfred State Wednesday in the first game of the Northern schedule.

Schmidt led off the bottom of the seventh inning and reached on a fielding error before junior Emily Daciw laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to push her to second. Burdick's single to short right field allowed Schmidt to score as the throw home was up the line and the catcher was not able to control the loose ball.

Western Connecticut threatened in the top of the seventh with a base hit and a double to put runners on second and third with one out but Daciw caught a popup bunt attempt for the second out and then struck out the next batter to end the scoring threat.

Daciw allowed five hits and struck out eight batters for the shutout victory and her first win of the season.

Schmidt had two hits to lead the offense.

Against Maine, the Owls (1-8) earned its first win of the season in a slugfest.

The Owls scored three times in the top of the first but Nazareth answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Maine extended the lead with two runs in the second and two more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead.

Nazareth came all the way back with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-7 lead.

The Owls tied it up with a single run in the fifth and took a 10-8 lead in the top of the sixth.

Sophomore Marissa Berghorn delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the inning as senior Sarah Simmons and junior Justine Brooks each scored to knot the game at 10-10.

A solo home run in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning score.

Nazareth did threaten in the bottom of the seventh as senior Jessica Klem led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before taking third on a deep fly to center field. Klem was stranded at third with the final ground out ending the game.

Sophomore Cassidy Hoffmier, Simmons, Berghorn and Klem had two hits each to pace the offense as Hoffmier and Simmons each scored twice. Simmons and Berghorn had three runs batted in each and Hoffmier added a pair.
