ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Maggie Burdick finished with three hits and the combination of senior Maddie Funk and junior Emily Daciw three complete-game wins to lead the Nazareth College Softball team to a pair of victories over Alfred State in the home opening doubleheader Thursday.
Nazareth (6-6) won the first game 3-2 and took a 9-0 win in five innings in the nightcap.
Alfred State (3-9) took a lead in the opener with a run in the first inning with a two-out single after a walk for the early lead.
Nazareth answered in the fourth with a run to tie the game. Sophomore Marissa Berghorn doubled with one out and scored two batters later as Burdick laced a single to the gap in right centerfield to score Berghorn.
The Golden Flyers added a pair of runs with a rally in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore Cassidy Hoffmier singled to start the inning and moved to third as senior Sarah Simmons smacked a double off the wall in right centerfield.
Hoffmier scored on a sacrifice fly by Berghorn and sophomore Megan Pum followed with a run-scoring single to give Nazareth a 3-1 edge.
The Pioneers added a run in the top of the seventh with a walk and a pair of singles but scored an unearned run after a dropped foul ball extended the inning.
Funk scattered eight hits and allowed just one earned run with two strikeouts and a pair of walks to improve to 3-3 on the season.
In the second game, Nazareth jumped ahead early with four runs in the first inning as Simmons hit a run scoring double and Berghorn a two-run single. Senior Jessica Klem added a sacrifice fly to give the Golden Flyers the early 4-0 lead.
Nazareth poured it on in the third inning with five more runners crossing the plate for a 9-0 lead. Burdick had a double, Klem and Simmons added singles for the big hits in the inning.
Daciw struck out seven batters and did not allow only one runner past first base in her second consecutive shutout victory.
Nazareth will host Brockport Wednesday. The doubleheader was scheduled to be played at Brockport but was moved to home games for Nazareth due to field conditions at Brockport.
