Offense Struggles in a Pair of Softball Losses

FORT MYERS, FL – The Nazareth College Softball team was limited to three hits in the first game and 10 hits on the day as the Golden Flyers dropped games to SUNY Oneonta (8-0 in five innings) and Western Connecticut State (10-4) Thursday in Florida.

Against Oneonta (6-4) the Nazareth (3-5) hits came in the third and fourth innings as freshman Katie Schmidt had a single in the third and sophomores Marissa Berghorn and Megan Pum had back-to-back hits in the fourth.

The Golden Flyers loaded the bases in the fourth as senior Jessica Klem walked but a strike out ended the scoring threat.

Oneonta followed with a big inning and scored all eight runs in the fifth to take the lead.

Seven of the first eight hitters all reached base including a pair of triples and a home run over the center field fence.

Nazareth went down in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

In the second game of the day, Nazareth started strong as junior Justine Brooks tripled to lead off the game and scored on a single by senior Sarah Simmons for the early 1-0 lead.

Western Connecticut answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning with four hits and a pair of fielding errors as three of the four runs were unearned..

The Colonials added single runs in the third and fourth innings to open up a 6-1 edge.

Nazareth responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to trim the lead and had more than half its hits for the game in the inning as the Golden Flyers saw hits from senior Maddie Funk with a double, Brooks and Simmons with singles and Berghorn with a double.

Western Connecticut rallied for four more runs in the sixth to put the game away.

The Golden Flyers with wrap up the Florida trip with games against Maine-Presque Isle and Western Connecticut Friday morning.
