RIT edges Nazareth, 16-15, in season opener

Golden Flyers scheduled to host St. Lawrence Sunday at 3 p.m.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- RIT used a three-goal flurry late in the fourth quarter Wednesday to inch past host Nazareth for a 16-15 women's lacrosse victory in the season opening game for both teams.

The Golden Flyers had taken a tenuous one-goal lead, 14-13, early in the fourth quarter on Emma States' second goal of the game, but the Tigers stormed back to score three straight times to go up 16-14 with less than four minutes left. Reva Mussi scored her second goal of the game for Nazareth with 1:17 to go to make the score 16-15, but RIT controlled the ensuing draw and was able to run out the remainder of the clock for the one-goal non-conference win.

Maren Wallace and Emma Robinson each scored three goals for Nazareth. States, Mussi and Annie Rubel each scored twice. Eleanor Matz had a goal and an assist and Kate Metzler and Maggie Vay also scored.

RIT was successful in controlling 22 of the 35 draws in the game and the Tigers were able to use the extended possession time to take an 8-3 lead midway through the second quarter. The Golden Flyers were able to use a flurry of their own -- scoring seven straight times between the second and third quarters to take a 10-8 lead with 4:55 left in the third. Robinson converted a pair of free-position chances and Rubel and Wallace each scored twice during the flurry.

RIT then scored the next four goals, including the go-ahead score with :32 left in the third quarter and an insurance goal on the first possession of the fourth quarter to take a 12-10 lead. Then, with the Tigers still ahead 13-11, Nazareth got consecutive goals from Robinson, Metzler and States to go up 14-13 with 9:07 left.  The Tigers tied it two minutes later and then took the lead for good on a man-down goal with 4:47 left.

RIT had a 38-28 advantage in shots, including three free-position goals. Katie Robinson played well in goal with 12 saves for Nazareth. Emma Parry was solid defensively with five ground balls and three draw controls.

Nazareth is home again Sunday for another non-league game against St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
