Men’s Hockey Can’t Overcome Early Lead in Road Loss

STEVENSON, MD – Freshman Logan Tobias scored twice and fellow freshman Blake Frost added a goal but it was not enough as the Nazareth Men's Hockey team dropped a 7-3 decision after allowing Stevenson to build an early 4-0 lead Friday afternoon at the Reisertown Sportsplex.

Stevenson (5-5 overall, 3-4 UCHC) jumped out to an early lead with three goals in the first period. The first came 2:40 into the contest and four minutes later the Mustangs extended the lead to 2-0.

Late in the period, Stevenson took advantage of another defensive miscue by Nazareth and netted its third goal of the game.

Early in the second period, the Mustangs struck again scoring on a power play just 1:03 into the period to extend the lead to 4-0.

Nazareth (6-4, 5-2 UCHC) finally got on the board at the 5:03 mark as freshman Logan Tobias picked up a loose puck in the slot area after the shot by freshman Blake Frost was blocked in front of the goal. Tobias took the puck, spun around and first a shot into the lower corner to narrow the gap to 4-1.

Three minutes later the same line struck again with a power play goal to trim the lead further. Nazareth made a couple passes behind the goal and Frost picked up the puck behind the goal and used a quick wrap around move to slide the puck into the open side of the net to make the score 4-2.

Nazareth continued to apply pressure and had a 17-5 shots advantage in the period but a rush up the ice in the closing seconds of the period led to another Stevenson goal as the Mustangs took a 5-2 lead into the second intermission.

In the third period, Stevenson scored to increase the lead to 6-2 before Tobias scored his second goal of the game as Nazareth used a rush up the ice to answer back and make it a three-goal game again.

The Mustangs added an empty net goal at the end of the period for the final score.

Nazareth held a commanding 36-18 lead in shots on goal.

The same two teams will meet again Saturday with a 3 p.m. game to complete the weekend series.
