FREDONIA, NY – The Nazareth Men's Hockey team scored early and held on late before senior Henry McKinney scored on a mini breakaway to give the Golden Flyers a 4-3 overtime win Tuesday night in the Steele Hall Arena.
McKinney set up the first goal, scored the second goal and won the game in overtime for Nazareth (3-2 overall).
Two early goals helped the Golden Flyers take control. McKinney started the first play as he battled for a puck at the blue line and after winning the battle raced in toward the Fredonia goal and eventually threaded a pass across to freshman Blake Frost who scored to give Nazareth the lead in the first minute of the game.
A short time later, after Nazareth had been whistled for a hooking penalty, McKinney stole a pass and skated in to beat the Blue Devils goalie for the shorthanded goal and a 2-0 Nazareth lead.
Fredonia answered back late in the first period and trimmed the lead to 2-1 but midway through the period, Nick Charron sent a long pass forward to graduate student Michael DiSchiavi skated into the offensive zone and set up sophomore Joey Schaefer as he moved into the slot from the blue line and sent a shot past the Fredonia goalie for the 3-1 lead.
The Blue Devils used a pair of power play goals in the third period to draw even with Nazareth.
In overtime, Fredonia had offensive pressure but a fanned shot from the point trickled into the Nazareth slot where Swartz picked up the loose puck and sent a long pass to McKinney who was waiting at the opposite blue line. After receiving the pass, McKinney skated in alone and beat the goalie with a hard low shot for the game winner.
Nazareth had a commanding 70-33 edge in shots and more than twice as many (41-20) shots on goal in the game. The Golden Flyers struggled on the power play with an 0-for-7 mark while Fredonia scored twice on five attempts.
Sophomore Matt Sayles finished with 17 saves for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers return home for United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) games against Arcadia Friday and Saturday.
