PINE VALLEY, NY – Sophomore Ryan Turse scored late in the second period for the Nazareth Men's Hockey team but it was not enough as Elmira scored a 3-1 win Friday night in the season-opening game for both teams.
Elmira (1-0) scored a goal in the first period and then added two more in the second stanza to take a 3-0 lead.
Turse scored the first goal of the season for the Golden Flyers (0-1) with 24 seconds remaining in the period to trim the lead.
Nazareth had a chance to cut the lead further in the middle of the third period but a goal was called back after a high stick ruling in the discussion between the officials after the goal had been registered.
The Golden Flyers were not able to trim the lead any further and had a penalty in the closing minutes that took some offensive momentum away from Nazareth.
Sophomore goalie Raphael Provencher made 30 saves for Nazareth including 12 in the second and 10 more in the third period.
Nazareth returns home for the home opener Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Geneseo.
