ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Henry McKinney scored a second period goal that cut the Geneseo lead in half at 2-1 but the Golden Flyers could not score the equalizer as Geneseo skated to the 2-1 win in a non-conference game Saturday night at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Geneseo (2-0) scored twice in the first period with a goal 1:04 into the game and a second with 1:34 left to play in the period for a 2-0 lead. The second Knights goal was on the power play and the lone power play goal of the game. The teams combined for 1-for-11 on the extra man opportunities.
In the second period, Geneseo was whistled for an early penalty and the Nazareth offense applied pressure with three shots but could not score.
Shortly after the Knights returned to full strength, the Golden Flyers were on the attack again with a scramble in front of the Geneseo goal. Freshman Blake Frost picked up a loose puck on the corner of the goal and fed a pass to McKinney in the slot who fired a shot into the right side of the goal to trim the lead to 2-1.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the way as sophomore goalie Matt Sayles made 22 saves over the final two periods for Nazareth. Sayles had 17 stops in the opening period and finished with 39 saves. The 39 saves are the second most in his career after stopping 41 shots in the UCHC playoff game at Chatham last season.
Nazareth returns to action with a pair of UCHC games at Lebanon Valley next weekend. The team will face Fredonia in a midweek game the following week and return home Nov. 11 and 12 to host UCHC foe Arcadia,
