Second-half rally overcomes Elmira, 70-60

Golden Flyers (12-1 overall) hosts Utica Saturday at 4 p.m.

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Junior Logan Blankenberg scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and grad student Kevin Underwood added 10 more points as Nazareth overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Elmira in men's basketball, 70-60.

The Golden Flyers won their 10th game in a row to improve to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the Empire 8 Conference. Elmira dropped to 2-10 and 0-3.

Nazareth outscored Elmira 41-25 in the second half as Underwood finished with 15 points and Blankenberg 14. Stephen Gabel contributed 11 points and nine rebounds and Jonathan Park added 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Nazareth trailed for much of the first half and by as many as 12 points, 35-23, with as little as 1:29 left in the half. Underwood completed a three-point play with 1:13 left, then Zach Stenglein hit one free throw and Josh Stenglein added two more before the half ended, enabling Nazareth to close within 35-29 at the half.

It took less than a minute for the Golden Flyers to tie the score in the second half as Blankenberg and Zach Stenglein nailed back-to-back three-pointers to make it 35-35. Baskets by Gabel and Blankenberg competed the 10-point scoring spree to put Nazareth up 39-35 and the Golden Flyers never trailed again.

Elmira scored to interrupt the scoring run, but Nazareth then scored the next nine points to go up 11, 48-37, with less than 15 minutes to go. Blankenberg scored two baskets, Gabel added another and Isaac Nelson knocked down a triple.

Elmira rallied to within six points, 55-49, with 7:08 left, but Nazareth got two baskets from Park and another three-pointer from Nelson to push the lead back to 13, 62-49, with less than four minutes to play.

Nazareth shot 43.3 percent (26-for-60) for the game, including 14-for-29 (48.3%) in the second half with all four of its three-point shots.

Nazareth is home Saturday to host Utica at 4 p.m. in a battle for first place in the E8 standings. The Pioneers knocked off St. John Fisher Friday, 63-56, to improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
