ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Graduate students
Lauren Begy and
Kristen Prohaska combined to score all three goals for Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers opened their Empire 8 Conference schedule in women's soccer with a 3-0 victory over Keuka at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Nazareth improved to 2-4-2 overall and 1-0 in the E8. Keuka is 0-7-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference action.
With goal scoring becoming increasingly difficult, Nazareth was finally able to cash in three times in the second half against the the defensive-minded Wolves. Nazareth generated numerous scoring chances with a 35-4 overall advantage in shots and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks. Begy, Prohaska and fellow graduate student
Caleigh Cahoon all returned for an extra season after all were granted eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Begy scored Nazareth's first two goals and Prohaska had the third and Cahoon delivered a pair of assists.
With scoring chances and frustration beginning to pile up, Begy finally put Nazareth on the scoreboard in the 66th minute. Cahoon had a throw in deep in the Keuka end and
Sydney Moss was able to flick the ball in the direction of Begy, who used her body to shield the defender before drilling a left-footed shot into the goal from about 10 yards out.
Just three minutes later, Begy tallied again. This time, the play was created from a corner kick by Cahoon, who delivered the ball to the head of
Megan McCraith. McCraith headed a shot on goal that was saved by Keuka keeper Jessica Pegg, but Begy was there to alertly knock in the rebound for her second goal of the game and a 2-0 Nazareth lead.
Prohaska's second goal of the season came in the 83rd minute as she was able to redirect a crossing pass from
Ashley Plane, who had beaten her defender along the endline.
Freshman
Annika Monfort played all 90 minutes in goal for Nazareth and collected three saves to produce her third shutout of the season. Pegg finished with 15 saves for the Wolves.
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday for a non-conference game at RIT at 4 p.m.
