Men’s Volleyball Comes from Behind to Salvage Split

ELMIRA, NY – Senior Antonio Sargent recorded 33 kills and freshman Owen Wickens added 30 kills in a pair of matches against Vassar College, ranked No. 3 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll, Saturday afternoon at Elmira as the Golden Flyers came back after dropping the first two sets in the second match to win a five-set United Volleyball Conference (UVC) victory. Vassar rallied for the five-set win in the first match.

In the first match Vassar (4-2 overall, 3-2 UVC) won by set scores of 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 29-31 and 15-12. It was similar in the second match as Vassar won the first two sets before Nazareth (5-3, 4-1 UVC) battled back to split the day. The Golden Flyers took the second match by set scores of 18-25, 16-25, 25-22, 32-30 and 15-8.

In the first match, Sargent led Nazareth with 17 kills while Wickens added 16 kills, nine assists, four blocks and six digs. Sophomore Trent Caviness had 34 assists and fellow sophomore Seth Terzo led the defense with 16 digs.

In the second match, Sargent added 16 kills and three blocks while Wickens registered 14 kills and four digs. Caviness handed out 45 assists and had eight digs and Terzo had 10 digs to lead Nazareth. The Golden Flyers used 10 kills and just one error (.600 attack percentage) in the fifth set to secure the victory.

The Golden Flyers will face a pair of ranked opponents in the coming week with a short trip to No. 6 St. John Fisher Tuesday and a pair of matches against No.4 SUNY New Paltz Saturday at Elmira to wrap up the regular season.
