ELMIRA, N.Y. – Visiting Nazareth won two more men's volleyball matches Tuesday as the Golden Flyers took both ends of a doubleheader from United Volleyball Conference rival Elmira.
Nazareth improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the United Volleyball Conference. Elmira dropped to 0-12.
The first match was considered a conference match and the Golden Flyers prevailed in four sets by scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-21. Nazareth won the second match -- a non-conference match by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 26-24.
Owen Wickens combined 15 kills with 10 digs and
Trent Caviness amassed 43 assists.
Antonio Sargent posted a shiny .632 hitting percentage (14-2-19) and
Seth Terzo had eight digs.
After dropping the opening set, Wickens had eight of his kills in the second set to square the match. Then Sargent and Wickens each had four kills in the third set as Nazareth posted a .474 hitting percentage (12-3-19).
Nazareth clinched the match with six more kills from Sargent and four from Wickens to take the fourth set.
In the second match, Sargent had 10 kills and Wickens had 25 assists. Terzo had 10 digs.
Sargent had three kills in the first set, four more in the second and three in the third. Nazareth prevailed in the third set after rallying from a 20-16 deficit. Wickens and
Nate Allen each had two kills down the stretch to fuel the comeback. Wickens' kill tied the set at 23-23, then Allen added a kill off a set from Wickens to enable Nazareth to take the lead. Elmira tied the set at 24-24, but Nazareth closed it out on a combined block by Wickens and
Colin Donahue and a kill by Sargent.
Nazareth returns to Elmira Saturday for a pair of key UVC matches against third-ranked Vassar at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
