ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Owen Wickens recorded 17 kills and sophomore Nate Allen added 14 as the Nazareth College Men's Volleyball team won the first set of the night but dropped the next three as St. John Fisher came back to post the 3-1 victory Wednesday night in Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth won the first set 27-25 but St. John Fisher came back with set scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-20.
Nazareth (2-1) took the opening set 27-25 as Allen had a kill to tie the set at 24-24 and Wicking provided the winning kill after a service error and an attack error by the Cardinals (3-2) for the early lead.
In the second set, Nazareth was within a point at 20-19 but St. John Fisher recorded five of the final seven points to even the match with the 25-21 win.
The Cardinals built an early lead in the third set with a 15-9 advantage but the Golden Flyers came back to knot the score at 18-18 and trailed by just a point at 23-22 before the Cardinals closed out the set with the final two points.
In the final set, Nazareth jumped out to a 5-2 edge but the Cardinals took a lead at 8-7. Later, the teams traded four-point runs as St. John Fisher took a 16-12 lead. Nazareth battled back to within two at 21-19 but the Cardinals scored four of the final five points for the match victory.
Wickens led Nazareth with 17 kills and also had eight digs and three blocks. Allen had 14 kills and sophomore Trent Caviness had 33 assists, five aces and nine digs. Sophomore Kaleb Luton added six kills and four blocks for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth returns to action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at home against Daemen.
