Golden Flyers win fourth straight, visit Houghton Saturday at 2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior Jonathan Park led a balanced five-player offensive contingent that scored in double digits for host Nazareth Friday as the Golden Flyers defeated Houghton in an Empire 8 men's basketball game, 88-67, on Mike Daley Court at the Kidera Gymnasium.

Park made eight baskets to finish with a team-high 16 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds as the Golden Flyers won for the fourth straight time to improve to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in E8 play. Houghton dropped to 0-3 and 0-3. The same two teams meet again Saturday at Houghton at 2 p.m.

Junior guard Zach Stenglein scored 15 points and passed for eight assists. Freshman Jordan Haggard scored a career-best 13 points and seniors Stephen Gabel and Kevin Underwood each scored 12 points. Gabel's effecient effort also included a game-high 14 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Nazareth never trailed Friday in recording its eighth straight win over the Highlanders. Park scored 12 of his points and Gabel had nine of his rebounds in the first half as Nazareth led 38-30 after 20 minutes. The lead was as large as 15 points, 21-6, following a three-pointer by Gabel with 10:57 left. Houghton used a 14-2 scoring run to claw back to within three, 23-20, on two free throws by Jordan Holmes (17 points) with 7:50 left.

A three-pointer by Haggard on the opening possession of the second half pushed the lead back to double digits. Underwood, meanwhile, scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including a 6-for-6 effort at the free throw line.

Houghton remained resilient and closed to within seven with 13 minutes left, but Underwood hit a short jumper and Stenglein canned a three-pointer to fuel an 11-4 scoring run and the Golden Flyers were comfortably ahead the rest of the way.

Nazareth went 32-for-65 (49.2%) from the field, including 8-for-27 (29.6%) from three-point range. The Golden Flyers also enjoyed a 47-34 rebounding edge.
