Golden Flyers Struggle in Men’s Hockey Road Loss

PINE VALLEY, NY – Elmira College took an early lead with four goals in the first period and finished with a 1-0 victory over the Nazareth College Men's Hockey team in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game Sunday afternoon at Elmira.

The Soaring Eagles (2-1-0, 1-1 UCHC) scored twice in a span of a minute in the middle of the first period and added a third goal at the 14:36 mark and capped the period with their fourth goal with 2:05 left in the first stanza. Elmira held a 16-5 shots advantage in the first period.

A scoreless second period that saw the Soaring Eagles post another 16 shots gave Nazareth (0-2-0, 0-2-0 UCHC) hope for a comeback attempt.

The chance for a comeback was dashed as Elmira netted six goals in the final 20 minutes including four in a span of three minutes starting with its fifth of the game at the 3:47 mark of the period. The Soaring Eagles added goals at 4:25, 4:43 and took an 8-0 lead at 6:35.

After several penalties, Elmira added a pair of late goals to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Gage Roberts made his first start in goal for the Golden Flyers and made eight saves before freshman Raphael Provencher came on to play the final two periods and was credited with 32 saves.

Nazareth returns to action Friday, March 5 for its home-opener against Wilkes with a 5 p.m. start at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
