Men’s Hockey Falls in Home-Opener to Wilkes

ROCHESTER, NY – Juniors Grant Gallo and Mitch Culver along with sophomore Henry McKinney each scored goals for the Nazareth College Men's Hockey team but visiting Wilkes University scored three times in the third period to skate away with a 6-3 victory in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game Friday night at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.

Gallo opened the scoring for Nazareth (0-3-0, 0-3-0 UCHC) midway through the first period on a feed from Culver.

Wilkes (2-2-0, 2-2-0 UCHC) answered with a pair of power play goals at 12:46 and 16:53 of the first period to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Culver scored an extra-man goal midway through the second period to tie the score but Wilkes answered less than 20 seconds later and Tyler Barrow scored his third goal of the game to regain the lead.

McKinney picked up the rebound from a blue-line shot by Ean Mendeszoon and put a shot past Wilkes goalie Michael Paterson-Jones to knot the game at 3-3 near the end of the second stanza.

The Colonels regained the lead 2:25 into the third period and then added a pair of goals after a five-minute major penalty against the Golden Flyers for the final margin of victory.

Freshman Raphael Provencher made 37 saves for Nazareth while Paterson-Jones stopped 29 shots for Wilkes.

The same two teams will meet again at 5 p.m. Saturday at Wilkes to complete the weekend home-and-home series.
