HERSHEY PARK, Pa. -- Host Lebanon Valley scored three unanswered goals, including the last two in the final four minutes of regulation play, to rally past Nazareth, 3-2, in the men's hockey opener for both teams.
LVC's Riley Johnson had a goal and an assist, including the game-winning tally with 2:37 to go to complete his team's comeback. The Dutchmen tied the score with just 4:00 to play on a goal by Max Loga.
After a scoreless first period, Nazareth used its special teams play to score twice in a two-minute span. Playing short-handed following a late first-period penalty to
Cole Moore, the Golden Flyers got a goal from senior captain
Jackson Shanley, who was assisted by
Casey Kubara and
Ean Mendeszoon, just 34 seconds into the second period.
A pair of LVC penalties gave the Golden Flyers a 5-on-3 advantage shortly thereafter and Nazareth capitalized as
Mateo Capriotti was credited with a power-play goal with assists from Moore and
Matt Stanek.
A tripping penalty on Shanley led to LVC's first goal as Blake Tosto converted on the power play. The score went unchanged until the two late third-period tallies that pushed the Dutchmen to the victory.
Lebanon Valley had a 24-20 edge in shots on goal with freshman goalie
Raphael Provencher making 21 saves in his first career start.
The Golden Flyers play again Sunday at Elmira at 4 p.m.
