ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Five players scored in double figures for the Golden Flyers Friday as Nazareth won for the sixth straight time in men's basketball with a 92-66 victory over visiting Alfred.
The victory avenged the Golden Flyers' only defeat in Empire 8 Conference action this season as they improved to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the E8. Alfred dropped to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Alfred defeated the Golden Flyers, 103-97 in overtime, back on Jan. 11.
Sophomore
Zach Stenglein led all scorers with 22 points, including four three-pointers. He also had five rebounds, six assists and three steals. Junior
Isaac Nelson added a career-high 18 points with three three-pointers to go with five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore
Jonathan Park had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Stephen Gabel also had 12 and
Kevin Underwood 10.
The game was close in the first half, but the Golden Flyers used a 20-2 scoring run over an eight-minute stretch to turn a tenuous one-point lead into a 42-23 advantage with 2:40 left in the half. Nelson hit a pair of three-point shots during the scoring run and freshman
Kobe Bogart also connected from long distance to fuel the flurry. Nazareth made 14 three-pointers in the game overall in 29 attempts. Stenglein scored 15 of his points and Nelson had 11 as Nazareth led 45-31 at the half.
In the second half the lead continued to grow as Nazareth expanded its advantage to as many as 28 points on a three-pointer by Bogart with 6:26 left. Gabel scored 10 of his points in the final 20 minutes and Underwood scored eight.
Nazareth shot well from the floor overall, connecting on 36 of 68 shots (52.9 percent). Nazareth visits Houghton Saturday at 2 p.m.
