ALFRED, NY – Sophomore Jadyn Abrams led four players into double-figures scoring as the Nazareth College women's basketball team raced to a 70-56 victory over Alfred University Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 road contest for the Golden Flyers.
The win was the fourth straight and kept the Golden Flyers (11-3 overall, 2-0 E8) undefeated in conference play.
Abrams led Nazareth with 16 points including four 3-pointers while fellow sophomore Caley Cornwell came off the bench for a career-high 15 points and seniors Rachel Benedict and Isabella Gjonaj each recorded double-doubles for Nazareth. Benedict had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Gjonaj added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Alfred (4-9, 0-2 E8) fell for the fourth consecutive game including back-to-back Empire 8 losses against St. John Fisher and Nazareth.
Nazareth used a 9-1 run midway through the first quarter that included a 3-pointer from Abrams and baskets by Cornwell, senior Kristen Simmons and sophomore Kim Davis as the Golden Flyers took a 14-8 lead. A late Alfred basket gave Nazareth a four-point advantage at the first break.
Freshman Ryann Stefaniak and sophomore Miyah Sizer hit 3-pointers to start the second quarter and extended the Nazareth lead to double figures.
Alfred battled back to tie the score at 24-24 but Nazareth finished the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 36-26 lead into the halftime intermission.
Gjonaj scored seven points early in the third quarter to help stretch the lead and later Cornwell and Abrams added 3-pointers to give Nazareth a 17-point advantage.
Benedict sealed the victory with 10 points in the final quarter. Her 13 points pushed her over 1,400 for her career and now stands at 1,408 points in 89 career games.
The Golden Flyers continue Empire 8 play next weekend with road games at Sage and Utica Friday and Saturday.
