NASHVILLE, TN – Sophomore Jadyn Abrams scored 19 points in the first three quarters as the Nazareth College women's basketball team battled to a 40-40 tie after the first 30 minutes but Carthage College scored the first 18 points of the final quarter to pull away with a 58-51 victory Sunday night on the first day of games at the Music City Classic at Trevecca University.
Abrams scored 10 of her season-high 19 points in the opening quarter as Nazareth (6-3) jumped out to a 17-14 lead. Carthage (5-5) rallied in the second quarter to outscore the Golden Flyers 15-8 and take a 29-25 lead into the halftime break.
In the third period, Abrams hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points to help Nazareth regain the lead. A 3-pointer at 6:15 of the period gave the Golden Flyers a 33-31 advantage. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the period and the teams entered the final period tied at 40-40.
The Nazareth offense struggled in the fourth quarter as the team missed the first 11 shots of the period and Carthage raced to an 18-point lead.
Makalah Sizer stopped the draught with a layup with 1:52 left in the period and the basket sparked an 11-0 run for the Golden Flyers and Nazareth closed out the game to trim the lead to seven points at 58-51.
Abrams led all scorers with her 19 points. Rachel Benedict chipped in seven points and a team-leading 11 rebounds while Isabella Gjonaj added seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Elizabeth White came off the bench and connected on a pair of 3-pointers late in the game to finish with six points.
Nazareth will play Bridgewater State at 3 pm Monday to close out the tournament play.
