ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's Rachel Benedict scored 24 of her career-high 29 points in the second half and in overtime Tuesday, but host Nazareth fell one point short in a non-conference women's basketball battle with Middlebury, faltering 83-82.

Middlebury's Maya Davis hit the game-winning basket with 1.9 seconds to play, then Benedict had a game-winning bid blocked as time expired as the Panthers prevailed to improve to 7-1 overall. The Golden Flyers dropped to 6-2 following their last home game of 2019.

In a well-played game that featured several plot twists, Nazareth also got 13 points apiece from sophomore Jadyn Abrams and freshman Ryann Stefaniak. Benedict's 29 points came on 11-for-22 shooting and included four three-point baskets.

Middlebury had four double-digit scorers, led by Kira Waldman with 20 and Alyna Baharozian with 19, including five three-point baskets in the second half.

Middlebury had leads of 11-10 and 30-29 after the first two quarters respectively, but Nazareth rallied to take a two-point advantage, 48-46, heading into the fourth quarter.

Nazareth scored the first three baskets of the fourth quarter -- one each for Stefaniak, Abrams and Miyah Sizer -- to take a seemingly safe 54-46 lead. The lead reached nine points, 59-50, after another basket by Sizer with 6:27 left and then again 66-57 on a three-pointer by Stefaniak with 4:40 to go.

Middlebury crept back into the game thanks largely to the outside shooting of Baharozian, who nailed three three-pointers in the final 3:50 to close the gap. Nazareth still led 73-71 after Miyah Sizer made one of two free throws with :26 left. The Panthers' Maya Davis forced overtime by knocking down two foul shots with :23 left.

The lead swung back and forth in overtime with the Panthers taking a two-point lead, 81-79, on a basket by Betsy Knox (19 points, 8 rebounds) with 1:57 to go. Abrams hit a free throw Stefaniak made two as Nazareth regained the lead at 82-81 with :31 left. After a series of timeouts, Waldman missed a shot for Middlebury, but Davis collected the offensive rebound and pushed it back up for the winning points.

Benedict got the ball on the ensuing inbounds pass, but her shot attempt was blocked by Knox as time expired.

Benedict finished with eight rebounds in addition to her 29 points. Abrams had nine rebounds and Miyah Sizer contributed six assists.

Nazareth is off until Dec. 29-30 when the Golden Flyers travel to Tennessee to compete in the Music City Classic. Nazareth plays Carthage of Wisconsin at 7 p.m. on the 29th and Bridgewater State from Massachusetts on the 30th at 3 p.m.
