PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Led by a fifth-place finish from junior
Deirdre Brett, Nazareth placed third Saturday at the Empire 8 Cross Country Championships at St. John Fisher.
Fueled by an individual title from Shelby Langlois, Houghton won the event with 43 points, two more than runner-up St. John Fisher. Nazareth had 70 points and was followed by Utica (80), Sage (123), Hartwick (190), Elmira (202) and Alfred (220).
In a closely contested men's race in which just 13 points separated the top four teams, Utica edged out Nazareth for first place. Led by a first-place finish from Mitch Marlow, Utica won the men's championship with 49 points. Nazareth, with a fourth-place finish from freshman Nathan McNally, was just two points behind with 51. Houghton was next with 51, followed by St. John Fisher (62), Alfred (139) and Hartwick (168).
In the women's 6,000-meter race, junior
Deirdre Brett set the pace with a fifth-place finish in 24:12.4, about a minute behind Langlois. Sophomores
Erin Reyner and
Claire Bargabos finished ninth and 11th respectively in 24:42.6 and 24:54.5. Junior
Kelly Artini was next in 19th place (25:39.0) with freshman
Megan Morin in 26th place (25:56.3). By finishing in the top 10, Brett and Reyner gained first-team all-conference recognition.
Other Nazareth runners were
Kaitlyn Dobbertin in 30th place (26:15.3) and freshman
Alexis Anagnostopulos in 34th place (26:29.3). Sophomore
Madeline Dovi (35th place, 26:31.1), junior
Hannah Hullihen (36th place, 26:10.0) and freshmen
Mackenzie Carney (41st place, 27:17.4) and
Carolyn Carlic (53rd place, 28:17.0) also competed.
In the men's 8,000-meter race, McNally was timed in 26:40.4, 37 seconds behind Utica's Marlow. Junior Christopher Celecki finished sixth (27:09.3) for Nazareth and sophomore Jake Suddaby emerged with a 12th-place finish (27:37.9). Freshman Nathan Bowers and and sophomore Josh Tomaka also figured into the scoring by finishing 13th and 16th respectively in 27:41.4 and 28:06.7. McNally and Celecki were first-team all-conference award recipients.
Other Nazareth competitors were junior Michael Brown in 19th place (28:16.1), freshman Lucas Sharron in 26th place (28:54.2), sophomore Josh Pomerleau in 39th place (30:00.2) and freshmen Calvin Garnes and Devan Ketcham in 41st (30:06.6) and 60th place respectively (33:14.2).
Nazareth competes again Nov. 16 at the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet at St. Lawrence.
