ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior
Rachel Benedict posted her second double-double in as many games as she combined 15 points with 12 rebounds in Nazareth 92-56 women's basketball victory over visiting Cobleskill.
The victory, on the newly anointed Mike Daley Court, boosted Nazareth to 2-0 overall and advanced the Golden Flyers to Sunday's final of the Mike Daley Invitational Tournament against Buffalo State at 3 p.m. Cobleskill dropped to 2-1 and will play in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Buffalo State edged Hilbert, 60-59, played in the other first-round game.
The Golden Flyers were in control Saturday from the outset as they scored the first 11 points and never trailed.
Lizzie Straub started by sinking a pair of free throws,
Isabella Gjonaj made a basket and then
Jadyn Abrams drilled her first of three three-point baskets.
Makalah Sizer scored and Abrams added two more free throws for an 11-0 advantage.
Nazareth settled for a 25-16 lead at the quarter break and broke the game open in the second quarter with a 22-9 scoring spree that ended with a 47-25 halftime lead. By then, Benedict had already secured her double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She went 2-for-3 from three-point range in the first half and added another three-pointer in the third quarter. Kim Davis came off the bench to score all eight of her points in the second quarter.
Nazareth's lead continued to swell in the third quarter as the Golden Flyers used a 27-11 scoring advantage to expanded the lead to 74-36. The Golden Flyers were able to substitute freely in the second half as everyone on the roster played and 14 different players scored.
Other noteworthy numbers included nine points for freshman
Ryann Stefaniak, four assists apiece for Straub and
Makalah Sizer, seven points and three steals off the bench for sophomore
Caley Cornwell and a pair of three-point baskets for senior
Demetria Woodard.
Nazareth went 12-for-29 from three-point range overall (.414) and 33-for-71 (.465) from the field overall.
