ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Tournament MVP
Cody Green scored a game-high 17 points Saturday as Nazareth defeated Fredonia, 71-54, in the championship game of the inaugural Mike Daley Invitational for men's basketball.
Green made five three-point baskets and was one of four Nazareth players to score in doubles figures as the Golden Flyers improved to 3-0 overall. Fredonia dropped to 2-1.
Jonathan Park scored 12 points and added nine rebounds and four blocks;
Stephen Gabel and
Zach Stenglein scored 11 points apiece and were also named to the all-tournament team. Dydy Bryan and De'Quan Smith made the all-tournament team for Fredonia. Vassar defeated Hunter in Saturday's consolation game, 72-66, with Vassar's Zach Bromfeld earning a spot on the all-tournament team. Green also paced the Golden Flyers in Friday's win over Hunter with a game-high 21 points.
Gabel and Green each scored nine points in the first half as they accounted for all four of Nazareth's three-point baskets as Nazareth led 32-26. Green and Stenglein each passed for three assists. Park had six of his points and five of his rebounds and was a force defensively with four blocks.
Fredonia went on a scoring run early in the second half to close the lead to one point, 38-37, but Nazareth scored the next eight points -- two baskets by
Kevin Underwood and a three-pointer by Green -- to extend the lead to 45-37. The lead continued to grow and reached double digits on a basket by Park with 11:28 to go.
Green and Stenglein each finished with five assists while Gabel grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Nazareth shot 28-for-58 (.483) from the field and 6-for-19 (.316) from three-point range.
Nazareth competes again Thursday in the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout at the University of Rochester. The Golden Flyers play RIT at 6 p.m. at the Palestra and then play Rochester Saturday at 8.
