ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Isabella Gjonaj led the Nazareth women's basketball team with 12 points and 10 rebounds but the Golden Flyers managed just 17 points in the first half and dropped a 65-46 decision to the University of Rochester Saturday night on the second day of competition at the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout tournament hosted by Nazareth.
Gjonaj was named to the All-Tournament team for Nazareth (3-3) while RIT's Cori Okada, St. John Fisher's Olivia Baumann and Sydney Masna and Rochester's Julianna Okoniewski rounded out the All-Tournament selections. Rochester's Lena Ethington was the tournament MVP. St. John Fisher won a 68-61 overtime decision over RIT in the first game Saturday.
Rochester (4-4) opened up a slim 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter as each team struggled from the field as Nazareth connected on just 25 percent (4-of-16) and Rochester made only 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from the field in the first 10 minutes of play.
After trading baskets easy in the second quarter, the Yellowjackets went on a 9-2 run to open up a double-digit lead. Gjonaj hit a late layup to close the gap to nine points as Rochester took a 26-17 halftime lead. Gjonaj scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half to lead Nazareth.
Rochester scored 20 points in the third quarter to extend the lead with a 46-29 advantage after 30 minutes.
Both teams used a majority of their rosters in the final period as Rochester maintained the lead and finished the 65-46 win.
The Golden Flyers shot better in the second half including a 46.2% clip in the fourth quarter on 6-of-13 shooting.
The Golden Flyers play next in the Daytona Beach Tournament December 19 and 20 with games against Marian (Wisconsin) and Ohio Wesleyan.
