DAYTONA BEACH, FLA – Freshman Jadyn Abrams netted a career-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Nazareth College women's basketball team to a 69-61 victory over Marian University in the first of two games for the Golden Flyers in the Ocean Center Arena.
Abrams and Nazareth (4-3) got off to a hot start with a 21-12 edge in the first quarter as the freshman scored 12 points.
Marian (0-10) battled back and trimmed the lead with a 14-10 edge in the second quarter as the Golden Flyers struggled shooting, hitting just 18.2 percent (4-for-22) from the field in the second stanza. Nazareth took a 31-26 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Golden Flyers came out hot in the third quarter to regain control. The teams traded baskets for the first couple minutes of the quarter with junior Rachel Benedict connecting on a pair of free throws for Nazareth.
Abrams then scored seven of the next nine points for the Golden Flyers in a 9-2 run that stretched the Nazareth lead to 43-33. Twins Makalah Sizer and Miyah Sizer combined for the final nine Nazareth points of the quarter to secure a 52-41 lead heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Golden Flyers maintained the double-digit lead until the last three minutes of the contest but a 3-pointer by Abrams, a layup by Benedict and free throws by Makalah Sizer sealed the win for Nazareth.
Abrams was 8-for-18 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line for her career-high 25 points while Benedict finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Isabella Gjonaj led the Golden Flyers with nine rebounds while Miyah Sizer had three assists and Delaney Martin recorded three steals.
The Golden Flyers will finish the Florida trip with a 3 p.m. game against Ohio Wesleyan Thursday afternoon.
